About Me

"Improving the lives of our residents in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC has been my priority for more than two decades." - Wong Kan Seng.
The welfare of residents is close to Mr Wong Kan Seng's heart. After all, he has been serving them for over 27 years as their MP. In 1984, when he first elected as MP for Kuo Chuan, many residents lived in rented flats, much like he once did growing up. Becoming a MP was an opportunity for Mr Wong to give back to the community. Since then, he committed himself to improving the lives of residents and their homes.
In 1991, Mr Wong was elected as the MP for Thomson GRC which included Bishan, Thomson and Sin Ming. It was later renamed Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in 1997 when Toa Payoh was included. Under his stewardship, Bishan was transformed to a modern, bustling township, replete with shopping malls, libraries, parks, sports facilities, voluntary welfare organizations, childcare and renowned schools. Bishan today is a far cry from its origins as a cemetery. Through lobbying by his GRC team, Toa Payoh was among the first estates to undergo Main Upgrading Program (MUP), Selective Enbloc Redevelopment (SERS), Lift-Upgrading, (LUP), while Bishan was the first few to be selected for the LUP. The estates are well maintained, with new and enhanced facilities continuously rolled out to meet the needs of residents.
Mr Wong wants to do more for his residents in the coming years. He has concrete plans to enhance facilities for the elderly and the less mobile, as well as for families and the younger generation. This includes lift upgrading, neighborhood renewal and home improvement programs, elderly services and environmentally friendly facilities, the integration of Kallang River into Bishan Park and more. Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC 5-Year Masterplan paints that vision.
On heartware, Mr Wong hopes to foster a stronger and lasting community spirit. He intends to introduce more platforms and initiatives for residents to interact and bond. The GRC team will consult residents for their ideas and bring them to fruition for the young and old.
Mr Wong Kan Seng is a member of the Cabinet for 26 years. With his experience, he appreciates the challenges of the nation and the evolving needs of our residents. He has held portfolios in Community Development, Communications and Information, Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Coordinating Minister for National Security and as the Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr Wong graduated from the then University of Singapore and did his post-graduate from the London Business School. Aged 65, he is married, has two children and four grandchildren.
